Hanson takes shock lead in preference count

UPDATE, 12.25PM Tuesday.

28 out 61 booths have now been counted and Ian Rickuss has taken the lead back from Pauline Hanson. But it remains extremely close, Rickuss leading by 56 votes - too close to call.

UPDATE, 8.45AM Tuesday.

Counting has resumed this morning and latest figures show Ms Hanson's lead has narrowed to 276 votes with 11% counted of the preference votes. There are no preference counts yet for big booths in the eastern end of the electorate such as Greenbank, Yamanto and Willowbank. The likelihood is that this count will be extremely tight.

UPDATE, 7.40PM: Counting appears to have ended today with 5 booths counted out of 61. Pauline Hanson still leads on preferences by 2138 votes to 1773, a lead of 365.

However ABC Election analyst Antony Green said he expected further counting would weaken her position.

"It is likely her preference flows will be weaker in polling places with a higher Labor vote," Mr Green said.

"That means the LNP could still be favoured to win Lockyer."

Pauline Hanson's Facebook page confirmed she had received "a fair few preferences" from all parties.

More to come tomorrow.

6.30PM: Preference counting in the Lockyer electorate is showing an extraordinary result that has Pauline Hanson ahead with 5 of 61 booths counted.

The LNP's Ian Rickuss appeared to have the seat won on Saturday expecting to get home on Labor preferences, as he led Ms Hanson by six percentage points on the count of first votes.

Yesterday the Electoral Commission removed the preference count when it showed KAP's David Neuendorf in second place ahead of Ms Hanson, when he should have been fourth.

The preference count is now back online and an astonishing story could be unfolding.

With 5 of 61 booths counted for preferences, Ms Hanson leads by 54.7% to Mr Rickuss' 45.3%.

If she wins she would be the fourth MP on the cross benches and possibly hold the balance of power.
