Farr out: state aged care closing

ELDERLY residents in Kingaroy have been left without a place in state-run care.

Last week the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service announced the state-run Farr Home Aged Care Facility would close.

Chairman Mike Horan confirmed the 16 beds at the Kingaroy home were the only public health beds for the aged in town.

He said the board intended Wondai's Forest View nursing home to be the primary aged care provider in the public sector for the South Burnett. "Farr Home is not a purpose-built nursing home and it will not meet the fire safety requirements of the Federal Government come September 2014," he said.

Mr Horan said no staff would be affected by the closure of Farr Home.

But Queensland Nurses Union's Auriel Robinson said the closure of the home would have a significant impact on residents and their families.

"Quite often when people go to state government homes it's because they do not have the assets to afford private or not-for profit homes," she said.

"Wondai's Forest View is only 40km away but sometimes the only way an elderly partner of a resident will be able to see them is relying on other relatives or taking a taxi because they can no longer drive."

Mr Horan said the families of the 13 residents currently at Farr Home were not under pressure to make a decision.

"The families have nearly two years to make a decision (about where their family member can go)," he said.

 Nanango MP Deb Frecklington said the closure should not come as a surprise to residents.
