Mbye's chance to hook cup role

WORLD CUP HOPEFUL: Bulldogs utility Moses Mbye
WORLD CUP HOPEFUL: Bulldogs utility Moses Mbye MICHAEL CHAMBERS

NEW national coach Mal Meninga will get a look at several Four Nations fringe players when his Prime Minister's XIII clashes with PNG in a hot and steamy Port Moresby today.

With a World Cup looming at the end of 2017, players like James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses, Ryan James, Moses Mbye (pictured), Dylan Napa and Jake Trbojevic will be out to impress the Kangaroos coach against the enthusiastic Kumuls.

Meninga has floated the idea of taking a back-up hooker to the UK next month for the Four Nations tournament with England, New Zealand and Scotland.

Bulldogs halfback Mbye fits the bill perfectly.

"We're considering taking two No.9s to the UK. We'll have to look at our options,” said Meninga, who stepped away from his highly successful Queensland Origin job to take over from Tim Sheens.

"I've seen Moses play in a number of positions, not just the halves. He's played fullback and in the centres, so he offers that versatility to cover several key positions if needed.”

Penrith fullback Matt Moylan is on the bench with Tedesco named in the No.1 jumper but the Panthers skipper could see plenty of action given the heat and humidity the Aussies will encounter.

Dragons forward Tyson Frizell is a player to watch after his impressive form for NSW in this year's Origin series. He has won a start ahead of David Klemmer and big Dylan Napa.

The Kangaroos caused chaos as fans mobbed players on their arrival in Port Moresby.

Wild scenes greeted Meninga and his players, who were greeted like rock stars in the rugby league-mad city.

Security struggled to cope with the massive crowd.

Frizell uploaded a video showing the crazy crowd scenes when the players arrived at the ground to meet the fans.
