THE culprit allegedly behind the spate of graffiti attacks in East Warwick has been arrested and charged by Warwick police.

The 19-year-old Warwick man is accused of spray-painting smiley-faced graffiti tags on properties along McEvoy, Percy, Hamilton and East Sts on Monday night.

Warwick police officer in charge Stewart Day said there had been an increase in graffiti incidents over the last few weeks.

"The 19-year-old man has been charged with 11 graffiti offences," Senior Sergent Day said.

"We conducted a search warrant and he has also been charged with possessing a dangerous drug and drug utensils.

"Police are continuing to investigate and hope to catch a number of offenders over the next few days."

Peter Butler's front retaining wall was tagged with a smiley-face followed by the word crazy.

"We have been in this house for 40 years and never had this happen before," Mr Butler said.

"The retaining wall is only two and half years old. I've been told I might not be able to get it off because it will soak in.

"It is not going to be cheap to replace 10 blocks."

Mr Butler said he believed the vandalism happened on Monday night.

"We didn't hear anything though," he said.

Around the corner on East St the Miller family's front window was tagged with the same black paint and smiley-face.

"We've been here 51 years and never had it happen before," Rita Miller said.

"It is pretty widespread though.

"It must have happened on Monday night because it wasn't there when I brought the mail in on Monday night.

"But it was there when I got the paper at 5am the next morning.

"At first I thought it was a reflection from inside, then I got closer and realised it was paint."

The graffiti was painted on houses, fences, railways bridges and shop fronts.

The 19-year-old man, arrested on Thursday night, will front Warwick Magistrates Court on November 25.
