'Gibberish' 000 call the result of days on ice, court hears

AN IPSWICH woman's "hair was messy, make-up smeared and clothes soiled" when police caught her making vexatious calls to 000 from a public phone box.

The charge was the latest of a string of offending beginning in September last year which saw Sharna Lee Hearps, 27, before Ipswich Magistrates Court today.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Matt Donnelly said the offending before the court began when police caught up with Hearps on September 25 when the car she was travelling in was stopped in the lane way of an Ipswich street.

He said when police asked her for her licence she refused and said "my licence number is f**k off".

Police searched her handbag and found a glass pipe which Hearps told police she used to smoke ice two days prior.

Sgt Donnelly said police were called to a phone box four hours later from which Hearps had made a call to 000 in which she made several vexatious statements.

He said she told the operator she was in the watch house and was being assaulted.

The court heard when police arrived she yelled at them to stay away and said they were not the real police before she stood in front of a passing car and climbed in the passenger seat, telling the driver to "drive, drive".

"Her hair was messy, the make-up on her face was smeared and her clothes were soiled," Sgt Donnelly said.

Hearps told police she had been using ice for two days straight.

Sgt Donnelly said Hearps offended again on June 25 when she and her friend went to the Prince Alfred Hotel at Booval and left with $250 worth of plants from the garden.

Hearps told police she was intoxicated when her and her friend nicked the five plants.

He said Hearps and a co-offender, who supported the defendant in court yesterday, attended the hotel at 1.10am and left at 2.40am with five plants valued at $50 each.

The court heard the plants were still in the co-accused's garden.

Sgt Donnelly said Hearps also attended the front counter of an Ipswich police station on October 19 last year and when police asked her if she had anything in her pockets she said, "I have leaf in my bra".

Police found 1.9g of cannabis in a clip seal bag.

Defence lawyer Vince Knox said his client was "clearly acting in some delusional state".

"She was talking some form of gibberish," he said of the vexatious 000 call.

"All these things seriously highlight her state of mind, she was all over the place."

Hearps pleaded guilty to eight charges including possessing cannabis, making a vexatious call to 000, obstructing police, contravening a requirement of police, stealing, possessing a drug utensil and two counts of public nuisance.

"You and these drugs don't mix," Magistrate David Shepherd told Hearps.

"You simply can't afford to be doing this."

The defendant told the court she was undergoing drug treatment which was, "doing what it's meant to do, it's keeping my head in the right frame of mind".

Hearps was sentenced to 80 hours community service.
