SCHOOLS across NSW are dumping muck-up days with some principals threatening to ban students from attending formal events or withholding their exam results.

The move follows revelations  that a teenager's  leg was broken during an alleged attack on muck-up day at a Sydney school this week.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with reckless wounding causing grievous bodily harm following an incident at St Luke's Grammar School in Dee Why.

The man was granted conditional bail to face Manly Local Court next month.

The 13-year-old injured boy will need surgery on the broken leg, the Daily Telegraph reported.

St Luke's Grammar School principal Jann Robinson said appreciated the efforts of a woman who helped the injured boy and his friend.

"She stayed with the boys until their parents arrived and it was good for the boys that their parents were there," Ms Robinson said.

"I am very grateful the bystander went to the assistance of the boys."

According to media reports, Casino High School and Georges River College, Wagga High School,  James Busby High School, Wiley Park Girls High School, Killara High School and Warners Bay High School have all dumped muck-up day.

A mother whose child attends Georges River said the school's principal told Year 12 students they would be banned from their formal, graduation and would  sit their exams "elsewhere" if they took part in muck-up day activities.

"This is ridiculous as my son attends another high school where a week of year 12 activities were put on," the woman told the Daily Telegraph.

"To threaten a child that they could not sit their HSC on school grounds because they brought in a water pistol is plain ridiculous."

Casino P & C president Karen Armstrong said the school dumped muck-up day because students previously damaged the school after-hours.
