Bombers blown away by Blues

ESSENDON'S finals hopes are in tatters, after the Bombers suffered two key injuries in a 96-point thrashing by Carlton at the MCG on Saturday.

A 10-goal second quarter from Carlton demoralised Essendon and the Bombers were outscored nine goals to two in the second half, losing 24.12 (156) to 8.12 (60).

The Blues have now leapfrogged Essendon on the ladder, sitting eighth on percentage - at least temporarily.

Carlton's Jarrad Waite - who led the line for the Blues with five goals - told Grandstand his team had lifted its intensity in key areas for the finals-shaping match.

"We had to come (good) with our contested possessions and our clearances," he said.
