Baynes snapped up by San Antonio Spurs to play in NBA

SAN Antonio looks set to incease its Australian connection by signing Boomers centre Aron Baynes.

The 26-year-old has been playing for Union Olimpija Ljubljana in the lucrative Euroloeague competition.

While his team has been eliminated from this season's Top 16, Baynes established himself as one of the premier big men in the league, averaging 13.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Former Australian national team coach Brett Brown is an assistant coach at the Spurs, while Boomers guard Patty Mills is also on the roster but didn't see any game time in yesterday's 108-105 win against the LA Lakers.

The Draft Express reported San Antonio had offered Baynes a $US3.5 million deal over four seasons, and also agreed to pay Olimpija Ljubljana $US400,000 to secure his release.

The Australian, who did his primary and secondary schooling at Mareeba outside Cairns, attended the AIS in 2005 before joining Washington State University where he emerged as one of the best players in the NCAA.

Former top Australian players Andrew Gaze and Shane Heal previously spent time with San Antonio.
