HERVEY Bay has slipped a rung in the list of Queensland's top tourism destinations, dropping from ninth place to 10th.

According to travel website Wotif.com, the Bay was number nine in its most-booked Queensland destinations in 2010, coming in behind Airlie Beach but ahead of Rockhampton at number 10.

But the figures from last year reveal Airlie Beach has edged ahead in popularity, forcing Hervey Bay back into 10th.

For two years running, the top three travel spots in Queensland were the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Queensland was listed as the most popular state for holiday makers, based on more than 250,000 bookings per month by Wotif.com customers in 2011.

Wotif Brands general manager Megan Magill said it was great to see Queensland maintain its place in the tourist market after a tough year.

"We've still seen some exceptional growth in regional areas of Queensland, like Rockhampton.">
